Description
Overview of the medicine
Fluroid-G Eye Ointment is a combination medication containing Fluorometholone, a potent corticosteroid, and Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is used to treat inflammatory ocular conditions where a bacterial infection or a risk of bacterial infection exists.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (about 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician. Treatment should not exceed 7-10 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic preparations due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before application. Pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, apply the ointment, and close the eye gently. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Fluorometholone suppresses inflammatory responses by inhibiting edema, fibrin deposition, capillary dilation, leukocyte migration, and phagocytic activity. Gentamicin acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours for anti-inflammatory effect; antibacterial effect develops with continued use.
Excretion
Mainly through kidneys for systemically absorbed portions; negligible systemic excretion from topical use.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use, as systemic absorption is low.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following ophthalmic administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver (Fluorometholone); Gentamicin is minimally metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fluorometholone, Gentamicin, or any component of the formulation.
- Acute untreated purulent ocular infections.
- Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., Herpes simplex keratitis).
- Mycobacterial infection of the eye.
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
Drug Interactions
Other topical aminoglycosides
May increase risk of local irritation or hypersensitivity reactions.
Other ophthalmic corticosteroids
May increase risk of intraocular pressure elevation.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment may be required. Rinse eyes with copious amounts of water if excessive amount applied.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Consult a doctor.
