Description
Overview of the medicine
Fluromet-01 Suspension is an ophthalmic corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory conditions of the eye. It helps to reduce swelling, redness, itching, and irritation in the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One to two drops instilled into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) two to four times daily. During the initial 24 to 48 hours, the frequency of dosing may be increased to every four hours. Care should be taken not to discontinue therapy prematurely.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is typically required for elderly patients; use adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic preparations, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before use. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Close your eye gently and apply pressure to the inner corner of your eye for a minute or two to prevent the medicine from draining out.
Mechanism of Action
Fluorometholone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that works by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and by decreasing the migration of leukocytes, thereby reducing inflammation and associated symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within a few hours.
Excretion
Excreted locally; minimal systemic excretion via urine and feces.
Half life
Mainly local action; systemic half-life is not clinically significant for topical ophthalmic use.
Absorption
Primarily local absorption into ocular tissues; minimal systemic absorption.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily within the eye and, if systemically absorbed, in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute untreated purulent bacterial infections of the eye.
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
- Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis).
- Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva.
- Mycobacterial infections of the eye.
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.
Drug Interactions
Mydriatics/Cycloplegics
May mask signs of infection or inflammation.
Other ophthalmic corticosteroids
Concurrent use of other ophthalmic corticosteroids may increase the risk of elevated intraocular pressure.
Storage
Store upright at room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether topical ophthalmic administration of corticosteroids can result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk. Exercise caution when administering to a nursing mother.

Clinical Trials
Fluorometholone has been extensively studied since its introduction, with numerous clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety in treating various steroid-responsive ocular inflammatory conditions. It is known for its relatively low potential to elevate intraocular pressure compared to other corticosteroids.
Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP), especially with prolonged use (more than 10 days).
- Slit lamp examination to monitor for cataract formation or corneal changes.
Doctor Notes
- Monitor IOP carefully in patients on prolonged therapy (more than 10 days).
- Contraindicated in viral, fungal, or mycobacterial ocular infections unless specifically combined with appropriate anti-infective therapy.
- Advise patients not to discontinue abruptly to avoid rebound inflammation.
Patient Guidelines
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- Do not wear contact lenses while your eyes are inflamed or during treatment unless advised by your doctor.
- Do not share your eye drops with anyone else.
- Report any worsening of symptoms or new eye problems to your doctor immediately.
- Do not use for longer than prescribed by your doctor to avoid serious side effects.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
This medicine may cause temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances immediately after instillation. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery until your vision clears.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid rubbing your eyes.
- Maintain good hand hygiene to prevent further infection or irritation.
- If you wear contact lenses, avoid wearing them during treatment for acute inflammation.
