Description
Overview of the medicine
Fuxtil 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection. For severe infections, 500 mg twice daily may be prescribed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required unless renal function is impaired. Monitor renal function closely.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 30-50 mL/min, 250 mg once daily. For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, 250 mg every 48 hours. Dose should be adjusted based on the degree of impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Fuxacillin, the active ingredient in Fuxtil, exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bactericidal effects typically begin within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys, both through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 60-70% of the dose is excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 6-8 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 80-90%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via cytochrome P450 enzymes (minor pathway) into inactive metabolites. A significant portion is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fuxacillin or any other fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
- History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone administration.
- Children and adolescents below 18 years of age due to risk of arthropathy.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR closely.
Theophylline
May increase plasma concentrations of theophylline, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Corticosteroids
May increase the risk of tendon rupture when co-administered with Fuxacillin.
Antacids (containing magnesium or aluminum)
May reduce absorption of Fuxacillin. Administer Fuxacillin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage may be considered. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may not be effective in removing Fuxacillin. Monitor vital signs and kidney function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fuxacillin is excreted in human milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Consult your doctor.
