Description
Overview of the medicine
Gastid-S Strawberry Flavor 480 mg Suspension is an antacid and anti-flatulent medication used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, sour stomach, and gas. It contains Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide to neutralize stomach acid, and Simethicone to break down gas bubbles.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 2-4 teaspoonfuls (10-20 ml) taken 4 times a day, 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed for elderly unless severe renal impairment is present. Use adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential for accumulation of aluminium and magnesium. Lower doses may be required.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Take orally after meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed recommended dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are antacids that react chemically with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form water and neutral salts, thereby increasing the pH of the gastric contents. Simethicone is an anti-flatulent agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce and be more easily expelled.
Pharmacokinetics

Within 5-10 minutes
Excretion
Unabsorbed portions are excreted in feces.
Half life
Not applicable for systemically unabsorbed components
Absorption
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are minimally absorbed systemically. Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Severe abdominal pain of unknown cause
- Appendicitis
- Intestinal obstruction
- Renal failure (especially for magnesium-containing antacids)
- Hypophosphatemia (due to aluminium hydroxide)
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Reduced absorption of digoxin.
Iron Salts
Reduced absorption of iron. Administer 2-4 hours apart.
Ketoconazole
Reduced absorption of ketoconazole (requires acidic environment).
Thyroid hormones
May reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Administer 4 hours apart.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Antacids can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer 2-4 hours apart.
Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate
Concomitant use with magnesium-containing antacids can lead to metabolic alkalosis and intestinal obstruction.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to severe constipation (aluminium), diarrhea (magnesium), or electrolyte imbalances. In rare cases, magnesium toxicity (muscle weakness, hypotension, respiratory depression) or aluminium toxicity (encephalopathy) can occur, especially in renal impairment. Treatment is supportive, including hydration and correction of electrolyte imbalance. Gastric lavage is generally not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but use under medical advice. Aluminium and magnesium are minimally absorbed. Simethicone is not absorbed. Consult a healthcare professional.
