Description
Overview of the medicine
Hexizen-05-70-hand-rub is an antiseptic solution used for rapid hand disinfection. It contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate and Ethyl Alcohol, offering a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For hygienic hand rub: Apply 3 ml to dry hands, rub for 30 seconds. For surgical hand rub: Apply 5 ml to hands and forearms, rub for 2-3 minutes, repeat if necessary.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply undiluted to clean, dry hands. Rub thoroughly until dry. Do not rinse with water.
Mechanism of Action
Chlorhexidine Gluconate acts by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and precipitating cell contents. Ethyl Alcohol denatures proteins and solubilizes lipids, causing cell lysis and rapid microbial death. The combination provides synergistic action and residual effect.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate (within seconds for alcohol, residual for chlorhexidine).
Excretion
Primarily remains on the skin surface; minimal excretion if absorbed.
Half life
Not applicable for topical hand rub; residual activity of chlorhexidine lasts hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin.
Metabolism
Not systemically metabolized to a significant extent.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine, alcohol, or any component
- Open wounds or damaged skin (due to potential for systemic absorption and irritation)
- Avoid contact with eyes, brain, meninges, or middle ear
Drug Interactions
Soap and other anionic agents
May neutralize the effect of chlorhexidine.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from direct sunlight and heat. Keep container tightly closed.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. Ingested large quantities may lead to alcohol intoxication and chlorhexidine toxicity (e.g., irritation of mucous membranes, stomach upset). Seek medical attention if ingested.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as systemic absorption is minimal. Consult a healthcare professional if concerned.
