Description
Overview of the medicine
A flavored oral rehydration salt (ORS) powder used to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes due to dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dissolve 1 sachet in 250 ml of pure drinking water. Drink as much as the patient can tolerate until dehydration subsides. Usually 2-4 liters over 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but monitor for fluid overload in patients with cardiac or renal issues.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor electrolyte levels, especially potassium and sodium.
How to Take
Dissolve the entire contents of one sachet in 250 ml (one glass) of pure drinking water. Do not boil the solution. Drink slowly.
Mechanism of Action
Works by facilitating co-transport of sodium and glucose across the intestinal mucosa, promoting water absorption and restoring electrolyte balance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes to an hour of ingestion).
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are excreted primarily via kidneys; water via urine, sweat, and respiration.
Half life
Not applicable for electrolytes and glucose in this context as they are utilized by the body.
Absorption
Electrolytes and glucose are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized for energy; electrolytes are balanced within physiological systems.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids (initiate IV then switch to ORS)
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- Perforated bowel
- Impaired consciousness (risk of aspiration)
Drug Interactions
None known with proper use.
Avoid mixing with other beverages or medicines unless advised by a doctor.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Over-consumption of ORS is unlikely to cause severe adverse effects in individuals with normal renal function. However, excessive intake in patients with impaired renal function or congestive heart failure may lead to hypernatremia or fluid overload. Manage by stopping ORS and symptomatic treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe during pregnancy and lactation. Essential for managing dehydration in these populations.

Lab Monitoring
- Electrolyte levels (in severe cases or with comorbidities)
- Renal function (in at-risk patients)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper mixing instructions to patients.
- Advise patients to seek medical attention if dehydration worsens or if there is no improvement after 24-48 hours.
- In cases of severe dehydration, IV fluids may be required initially before switching to ORS.
Patient Guidelines
- Always mix with pure drinking water; do not use hot water.
- Do not add sugar or any other ingredients.
- Discard any unused solution after 12 hours if kept at room temperature, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
- Continue feeding infants and children during and after diarrhea.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is given as needed. If a scheduled intake is missed, continue as soon as remembered or needed. There is no fixed 'dose' in the same way as other medicines, rather it's given until rehydration is achieved.
Driving Precautions
No known effect on driving ability.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent recurrence of diarrhea.
- Wash hands thoroughly before preparing ORS and after using the toilet.
