Description
Overview of the medicine
Irovit-Z Syrup is a nutritional supplement formulated to address iron, zinc, and B-vitamin deficiencies. It helps in the formation of red blood cells, supports immune function, and contributes to overall growth and development.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) once daily or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, or as directed by the physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required in severe renal impairment. Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Iron is crucial for hemoglobin synthesis and oxygen transport. Zinc is involved in numerous enzymatic reactions, immune function, and cell growth. B-complex vitamins (e.g., B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) play vital roles in energy metabolism, neurological function, and red blood cell formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement may be seen within weeks, depending on the severity of deficiency.
Excretion
Iron is minimally excreted. Zinc is primarily excreted via feces. B-vitamins are excreted mainly via urine.
Half life
Variable for individual components. Iron's biological half-life is long due to recycling; Zinc is about 120 days in the body; B-vitamins vary from hours to days.
Absorption
Polymaltose Iron Complex is absorbed primarily in the duodenum, often via a non-heme pathway, leading to less gastrointestinal irritation. Zinc absorption occurs mainly in the small intestine. B-vitamins are generally well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Iron is primarily stored in ferritin and hemosiderin. Zinc is largely bound to proteins. B-vitamins are metabolized in the liver and active forms are produced.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders
- Active peptic ulcer, regional enteritis, or ulcerative colitis
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Can decrease iron absorption. Avoid concomitant use.
Levothyroxine
Iron may decrease levothyroxine absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce its absorption. Separate doses.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Iron and Zinc can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Take Iron/Zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, pallor, and potentially shock. In severe cases, iron overdose can lead to metabolic acidosis, cardiovascular collapse, and liver damage. Seek immediate medical attention. Management involves supportive care, gastric lavage, and chelating agents (e.g., deferoxamine) if iron toxicity is severe.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands. Consult a physician before use.
