Overview of the medicine
Joyxit 5 mg Tablet contains Escitalopram Oxalate, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 10 mg once daily, may be increased to 20 mg/day after 1 week. For GAD/SAD/OCD, often 5-10 mg initially.
Elderly
Initial dose 5 mg once daily, maximum recommended dose 10 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Escitalopram selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the central nervous system, leading to an increase in the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft and enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. This action helps to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Onset
Clinical effects usually begin within 1-2 weeks, full effect within 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Mainly via urine and feces.
Half life
Approximately 27-32 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, peak plasma concentrations reached in 4-5 hours.

Primarily hepatic via CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4 to active and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Concomitant use with MAOIs or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy
- Known hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram
- Concomitant use with pimozide
- Congenital long QT syndrome or known long QT interval prolongation
Drug Interactions
MAOIs
Risk of serotonin syndrome (hyperthermia, rigidity, myoclonus, autonomic instability).
Pimozide
Increased plasma levels of pimozide, potentially leading to QT prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias.
Warfarin
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing bleeding risk.
NSAIDs/Aspirin
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include dizziness, tremor, somnolence, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, seizures, and rarely, QT prolongation. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, maintaining an open airway, monitoring cardiac and vital signs. Activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Escitalopram is excreted in breast milk; advise against breastfeeding or discontinue the drug.
