Description
Overview of the medicine
Kafu 1 mg Syrup is an advanced second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms associated with allergic conditions such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It provides effective relief from sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin rashes without causing significant drowsiness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 5 ml (1 mg) once daily. In some cases, dosage may be increased to 10 ml (2 mg) once daily if needed. Children 2-12 years: 2.5 ml (0.5 mg) once daily; for children weighing more than 30 kg, 5 ml (1 mg) once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required in the elderly unless there is renal impairment. Use with caution.
Renal_impairment
For patients with moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <50 mL/min), the initial dose should be reduced (e.g., 2.5 ml or 0.5 mg once daily).
How to Take
Kafu syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Kafu acts as a selective peripheral H1 receptor antagonist. It blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms, by binding to H1 receptors. This prevents histamine from triggering symptoms like itching, sneezing, and inflammation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom relief typically begins within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted through the urine, with a minor portion eliminated in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 10-15 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, likely via cytochrome P450 enzymes (e.g., CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients.
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min).
Drug Interactions
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Co-administration may potentiate CNS depression, although Kafu typically causes less sedation.
P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., cyclosporine)
May alter absorption and distribution of Kafu.
CYP3A4 Inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin)
May increase plasma concentrations of Kafu, potentially leading to increased side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, somnolence, headache, or tachycardia. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. There is no specific antidote for Kafu.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is unknown whether Kafu is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
