Description
Overview of the medicine
Lacrigel-G 0.2% w/v Eye Gel is an artificial tear preparation containing Carbomer 980, designed to provide prolonged lubrication and hydration to the ocular surface, effectively relieving symptoms of dry eyes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily, or as needed, to relieve dry eye symptoms.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients. Use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is negligible.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Instill one drop into the pouch. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. Close the eye gently for a few moments. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Carbomer 980 is a high molecular weight polymer that forms a mucoadhesive gel on the ocular surface. It increases the viscosity of the tear film, thereby prolonging the tear film breakup time and retaining moisture, providing sustained relief from dry eye symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate relief upon application.
Excretion
Cleared from the ocular surface primarily through blinking and natural tear drainage.
Half life
Not applicable systemically. On the ocular surface, its duration of action is typically several hours due to its gel consistency.
Absorption
Carbomer 980 is not absorbed systemically from the ocular surface due to its large molecular size. Its action is localized to the eye.
Metabolism
No systemic metabolism occurs as it is not absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Carbomer 980 or any other ingredient in the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If other eye drops are being used, Lacrigel-G should be instilled last, allowing a minimum interval of 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent washout of other medications.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to negligible systemic absorption. If excessive amount is applied, it can be rinsed from the eye with lukewarm water. No specific antidote is known.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Lacrigel-G is generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation as systemic absorption is minimal. However, as with all medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
