Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxitab 1 mg Tablet contains Sodium Picosulfate, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 5-10 mg once daily, preferably at night. In some cases, up to 15 mg may be given for bowel preparation. For Laxitab 1mg, dosage might be adjusted or combined.
Elderly
Initial dose may be lower, e.g., 5 mg once daily, adjusted based on response. Use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment due to potential electrolyte disturbances.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, preferably at bedtime. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Effects usually occur after 6-12 hours.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium Picosulfate is a prodrug that is converted by colonic bacteria into its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM). BHPM acts locally on the colon wall, stimulating peristalsis and increasing water and electrolyte secretion into the colon, leading to softened stools and easier bowel movements.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours (due to activation by colonic bacteria).
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces as the active metabolite and its glucuronide conjugates. A small amount is excreted in urine.
Half life
The active metabolite (BHPM) has a half-life of approximately 6-10 hours, but due to enterohepatic recirculation, the overall effect can last longer.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in its intact form. Systemic absorption of the active metabolite (BHPM) is minimal.
Metabolism
Undergoes bacterial hydrolysis in the colon to its active metabolite BHPM. BHPM is then glucuronidated in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel disease)
- Severe dehydration
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
- Hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any component of the formulation
- Severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
Diuretics, Corticosteroids
May increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia).
Antibiotics (broad-spectrum)
May reduce the laxative effect by altering gut flora responsible for converting Sodium Picosulfate to its active form.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Risk of toxicity increased due to hypokalemia caused by laxative abuse.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management involves supportive care, correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and discontinuation of the laxative.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Limited data available. Lactation: Minimal amounts of active metabolite may be excreted into breast milk. Use with caution. Consult a doctor.

Numerous clinical trials have established the efficacy and safety of Sodium Picosulfate in treating constipation and for bowel preparation. Studies have focused on its onset of action, dosage optimization, and comparison with other laxatives.
Lab Monitoring
- Electrolyte levels (especially potassium) if used long-term or in patients at risk of imbalance.
- Renal function in vulnerable patients.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize short-term use only. Investigate underlying causes of chronic constipation.
- Educate patients on lifestyle modifications (diet, fluid, exercise) alongside medication.
- Monitor electrolytes if patient has pre-existing conditions or prolonged use.
- Advise against concurrent use of other laxatives without consultation.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not use for more than 5-7 days without consulting a doctor.
- Increase fluid intake to prevent dehydration.
- Do not take other laxatives concurrently unless advised by a doctor.
- This medicine is for short-term relief, address underlying causes of constipation.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If taking for bowel prep, follow specific instructions.
Driving Precautions
Generally safe. However, if you experience dizziness or severe abdominal cramps, avoid driving or operating machinery until symptoms subside.
