Description
Overview of the medicine
Lemovit-C 250 mg Chewable Tablet is a vitamin C supplement used to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency, boost immunity, and support overall health. It is an essential antioxidant.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For deficiency: 250-500 mg daily. For general supplementation: 250 mg daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adults, with caution for pre-existing renal conditions. Dosage adjustment may be required.
Renal_impairment
Generally well-tolerated. High doses should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment or history of kidney stones due to increased risk of oxalate crystal formation. Consult a physician.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed thoroughly or allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting the body from oxidative damage. It is crucial for collagen synthesis, wound healing, iron absorption, and immune function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily renally excreted, both as unchanged ascorbic acid and its metabolites. Excretion increases with higher doses.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days (dose-dependent and varies with tissue saturation).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, through an active transport mechanism.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the body to inactive metabolites such as dehydroascorbic acid, 2,3-diketogulonic acid, and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones (especially with high doses).
- Hemochromatosis (due to increased iron absorption).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may potentially decrease the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, though this interaction is not consistently observed.
Deferoxamine
Concurrent use may increase iron toxicity, particularly cardiotoxicity, in patients with iron overload.
Oral contraceptives
May lower plasma levels of ascorbic acid.
Aluminum-containing antacids
Ascorbic acid can increase the absorption of aluminum from antacids, potentially leading to aluminum toxicity in patients with renal impairment.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare and generally not life-threatening. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and osmotic diarrhea. Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be used only under medical supervision.

YesClinical Trials
Ascorbic acid has been extensively studied for its role in nutrition and various health conditions. Specific clinical trials for 'Lemovit-C' as a brand would primarily focus on bioavailability and quality assurance rather than efficacy, which is well-established for the generic compound.
Lab Monitoring
- No specific lab monitoring is routinely required for vitamin C supplementation at recommended doses. Patients with a history of kidney stones or certain metabolic disorders may require urine oxalate monitoring with high doses.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the importance of a balanced diet alongside supplementation.
- Caution patients against exceeding recommended doses, especially those with a history of renal calculi.
- Reassure patients about the general safety profile when used appropriately.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed or directed on the label.
- Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing or allow it to dissolve completely in your mouth.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Lemovit-C is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. No special precautions are necessary.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which are natural sources of Vitamin C.
- Ensure adequate hydration.
- Avoid smoking as it depletes vitamin C levels in the body.
