Description
Overview of the medicine
Limxid 125 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
125 mg every 8-12 hours, or as directed by physician. Duration of treatment varies with infection type and severity, typically 5-10 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age, but renal and hepatic function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
For severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min), a dose reduction or extended dosing interval may be necessary. Consult physician for specific guidance.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Limaxin, the active ingredient, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication. It is bacteriostatic at lower concentrations and bactericidal at higher concentrations.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in urine (60-70%) and some through bile/feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; oral bioavailability approximately 80-90%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism via the cytochrome P450 system (e.g., CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Limaxin or any macrolide antibiotic.
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior Limaxin therapy.
- Concomitant use with certain drugs like cisapride, pimozide, or ergot alkaloids.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased serum Digoxin levels may occur, monitor Digoxin levels.
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect, leading to a risk of bleeding. INR monitoring is recommended.
Theophylline
May increase plasma concentrations of Theophylline, requiring dose adjustment.
Antacids (containing Mg/Al)
May decrease the absorption of Limaxin. Take Limaxin at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Ergot Alkaloids (e.g., Ergotamine, Dihydroergotamine)
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to potential for acute ergotism.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include severe gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and possibly transient hearing loss. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and supportive measures should be employed as necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Limaxin is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
