Description
Overview of the medicine
Nolargy 120 mg tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis, 120 mg orally once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria, 180 mg orally once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Take Nolargy 120 mg tablet orally, preferably before a meal, with a glass of water. Do not take with fruit juices as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing the effects of histamine which cause allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin rashes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Approximately 80% is excreted in the feces and 11% in the urine, primarily as unchanged drug.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) are reached approximately 2-3 hours after a dose.
Metabolism
Fexofenadine undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism (less than 5% of the total dose is metabolized).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any components of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
Concomitant use with these drugs may increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations, but this increase is generally not considered clinically significant.
Aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids
These antacids can reduce the absorption of fexofenadine; separate administration by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis is not effective in removing fexofenadine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not recommended during breastfeeding as fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk.
