Description
Overview of the medicine
Arodin-5-W Ointment contains Povidone-Iodine 5% w/w, an antiseptic agent used to prevent and treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It works by releasing iodine, which kills a wide range of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients; apply as for adults.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential for systemic iodine absorption. Consult a healthcare professional.
How to Take
Clean the affected area. Apply a thin layer of ointment directly to the skin or spread on a sterile gauze pad and apply to the affected area. Cover with a sterile dressing if necessary.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-Iodine works by releasing free iodine upon contact with skin and mucous membranes. The free iodine rapidly penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. It has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, mycobacteria, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within seconds to minutes for antimicrobial action.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally as iodide. Some excretion via feces.
Half life
Systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is approximately 1-2 days, but topical action is localized.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically through intact skin. Significant absorption can occur through large areas of denuded skin or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed iodine is metabolized in the thyroid gland.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone.
- Patients with thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter) due to potential for iodine absorption.
- Infants under 1 month (due to skin permeability and risk of systemic absorption).
- Before and after radioiodine therapy.
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concurrent use may lead to hypothyroidism, especially in patients with pre-existing thyroid conditions.
Octenidine
Should not be used simultaneously or sequentially with octenidine-containing antiseptics on adjacent or extensive areas, as this may cause transient skin discoloration or necrosis.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic effects unless applied to very large areas of broken skin. Symptoms of systemic iodine toxicity include gastrointestinal upset, metabolic acidosis, renal impairment, and thyroid dysfunction. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Excessive absorption of iodine can affect fetal thyroid development or be excreted in breast milk. Consult a doctor before use, especially during prolonged or extensive application.
