Description
Overview of the medicine
Asivert (Betahistine) is a medication used to treat symptoms of Meniere's disease, such as vertigo (dizziness), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 8-16 mg three times daily, or 24 mg twice daily. For 25 mg tablets, usually 25 mg two to three times daily, adjusted according to individual response.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in elderly patients due to potential age-related organ function decline.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment guidelines are available; use with caution and monitor patient response.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Betahistine acts as a weak histamine H1-receptor agonist and a potent histamine H3-receptor antagonist. It is believed to increase blood flow to the inner ear and reduce endolymphatic pressure, thereby improving symptoms of Meniere's disease.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects are gradual and may take several weeks to become noticeable.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites (mainly 2-PCA) within 24 hours.
Half life
The elimination half-life of its main metabolite (2-oxo-pyridylacetic acid) is approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within approximately 1 hour.
Metabolism
Rapidly and almost completely metabolized via first-pass metabolism in the liver to 2-oxo-pyridylacetic acid (2-PCA).
