Description
Overview of the medicine
Brodil-Levo 1 mg Tablet is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, and sneezing. It is also used to relieve itching and rashes in chronic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical adult dose is 5 mg once daily. For 1 mg tablet, dose should be as directed by physician, usually 1 to 5 tablets daily.
Elderly
A dose adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Start with a lower dose.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment is required based on creatinine clearance. For mild impairment: 2.5 mg every other day. Moderate: 2.5 mg twice weekly. Severe: Contraindicated.
How to Take
Take Brodil-Levo 1 mg Tablet orally with or without food, usually once daily in the evening. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Levocetirizine, the active ingredient, selectively blocks histamine H1 receptors. This prevents histamine, a substance released during allergic reactions, from binding to its receptors and causing allergy symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (approximately 85.4% of the dose) in urine and feces (12.9%).
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 7-10 hours in healthy adults.
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 0.9-1.3 hours.
Metabolism
Less than 14% of the dose is metabolized, primarily by aromatic oxidation, N- and O-dealkylation, and taurine conjugation. It is not extensively metabolized by the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine or any other piperazine derivatives
- Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min)
- Patients on hemodialysis
- Infants less than 6 months of age
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May increase plasma concentrations of levocetirizine and extend its half-life, potentially increasing adverse effects.
Theophylline
May slightly decrease the clearance of levocetirizine, but this interaction is generally not clinically significant.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Concurrent use may increase CNS depression (drowsiness, impaired cognitive function).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults and agitation or restlessness followed by drowsiness in children. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate human studies. Use only if clearly needed. Levocetirizine is excreted in breast milk; consult a doctor before breastfeeding.
