Description
Overview of the medicine
Calfix-DX 600 mg Tablet is a combination medicine containing Calcium Carbonate and Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). It is primarily used to prevent or treat calcium deficiency and to support bone health by ensuring adequate calcium absorption.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but may require closer monitoring of calcium levels if there are renal concerns.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required, and serum calcium/phosphate levels should be monitored. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally, preferably with or after food, with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral required for various physiological processes, including bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) enhances the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the body, promoting proper bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects on bone density and mineral levels are gradual, typically observed over weeks to months.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces. Absorbed calcium is excreted primarily in urine and feces. Vitamin D metabolites are excreted mainly in bile and feces.
Half life
Elemental calcium has a complex pharmacokinetic profile. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) has a plasma half-life of about 19-25 hours, but its active metabolite calcitriol has a half-life of 3-6 hours. The storage form (25-hydroxyvitamin D) has a much longer half-life (several weeks).
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed from the small intestine, primarily in the duodenum. Absorption is increased by Vitamin D. Cholecalciferol is absorbed from the small intestine, mainly in the jejunum and ileum, and incorporated into chylomicrons.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense. Cholecalciferol is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcidiol), and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substances or any of the excipients.
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood).
- Severe hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine).
- Severe renal impairment.
- Vitamin D hypervitaminosis.
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium may impair levothyroxine absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce their absorption. Take calcium at least 30-60 minutes after bisphosphonates.
Cardiac Glycosides
Hypercalcemia increases the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Thiazide diuretics
May reduce renal excretion of calcium, leading to hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can interfere with the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2-3 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, polyuria, polydipsia, muscle weakness, fatigue, confusion, kidney stones in severe cases). Management involves discontinuing the product, rehydration, and symptomatic treatment. Severe cases may require hospitalization.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium and Vitamin D are essential during pregnancy and lactation. This medicine can be used during these periods under medical supervision if the benefits outweigh the potential risks and the dosage is within recommended limits. Consult your doctor.

Clinical Trials
Specific clinical trials for 'Calfix-DX' are brand-specific. However, the efficacy and safety of calcium carbonate and cholecalciferol in various indications (e.g., osteoporosis, calcium deficiency) are well-established through numerous clinical trials worldwide.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (especially in patients with renal impairment or on high doses).
- Urinary calcium excretion (if hypercalciuria is suspected).
- Serum phosphate levels.
- Renal function (e.g., serum creatinine) in patients with long-term use or renal impairment.
- Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (to assess vitamin D status).
Doctor Notes
- Ensure patient understanding of proper dosage and administration.
- Counsel patients on potential drug and food interactions.
- Advise on lifestyle modifications that complement therapy (diet, exercise, sun exposure).
- Monitor serum calcium, vitamin D levels, and renal function in patients on long-term therapy or with pre-existing conditions.
- Emphasize that this is a supplement, not a sole treatment for severe underlying conditions.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as indicated on the label.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a healthcare professional.
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
- Report any unusual or severe side effects to your doctor immediately.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Calfix-DX is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium (e.g., dairy products, leafy greens) and Vitamin D (e.g., fatty fish, fortified foods).
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise to support bone health.
- Ensure adequate exposure to sunlight (while practicing sun safety) for natural Vitamin D synthesis.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, as these can negatively impact bone density.
