Description
Overview of the medicine
Calsil-Plus 500 mg Tablet is a combination of Calcium and Vitamin D3, primarily used to support bone health, prevent and treat osteoporosis, and address calcium and vitamin D deficiencies.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but higher vitamin D intake might be beneficial; consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and under medical supervision in patients with renal impairment. Dosage adjustment may be required.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or after meals. The tablet can be chewed or swallowed whole, as advised by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone formation, maintenance, and various physiological functions like nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gut and its incorporation into the bone matrix, thereby promoting bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
The therapeutic effects are gradual and observed with long-term consistent use.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces and urine. Vitamin D3 metabolites are mainly eliminated through bile and feces.
Half life
The half-life of calcium is variable due to its dynamic equilibrium within the body. The active metabolite of Vitamin D3 (calcitriol) has a half-life of 4-6 hours, but storage forms can persist longer.
Absorption
Calcium is primarily absorbed in the small intestine, and Vitamin D3, being a fat-soluble vitamin, is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense but is actively regulated and integrated into bone tissue. Vitamin D3 undergoes hydroxylation in the liver and kidneys to form its active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Hypervitaminosis D (excess vitamin D levels)
- Severe renal impairment
- History of kidney stones
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium may interfere with levothyroxine absorption. Separate doses by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates. Administer at least 30 minutes to 2 hours apart.
Corticosteroids
May reduce calcium absorption and metabolism, potentially increasing the need for calcium and vitamin D.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase serum calcium levels by reducing calcium excretion.
Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can chelate these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of calcium and vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia, symptoms of which include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, confusion, polyuria, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. Management involves discontinuing the supplement, hydration, and other medical interventions as necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calsil-Plus 500 mg Tablet is generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements. However, always consult your doctor for appropriate dosage and to ensure it is suitable for your specific condition.
