Description
Overview of the medicine
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine with antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, and sedative properties. It is used to treat allergic reactions and as an appetite stimulant.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
4 mg to 20 mg daily, usually divided into 2-3 doses. For appetite stimulation, typically 4 mg 3 times daily.
Elderly
Start with lower doses (e.g., 4 mg once or twice daily) due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cyproheptadine acts as a potent H1-receptor antagonist. It also has antiserotonergic activity (at 5-HT2 receptors) and anticholinergic effects, contributing to its appetite-stimulating and sedative properties.
Pharmacokinetics
