Elderly

How to Take
For oral use. Can be taken with or without food, once daily.
Mechanism of Action
Ebastine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively inhibits the binding of histamine to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the symptoms associated with allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 1-3 hours.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via the urine in the form of metabolites.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life of carebastine is 15 to 19 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and extensively metabolized during first-pass metabolism to its active metabolite, carebastine.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via CYP3A4, to carebastine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ebastine or any of its excipients.
- Patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Drug Interactions
Rifampicin
May decrease plasma levels of ebastine by inducing its metabolism, potentially reducing its efficacy.
Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Clarithromycin
May increase plasma levels of ebastine and its active metabolite, carebastine, potentially increasing the risk of QT prolongation.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given, with monitoring of vital functions and ECG for at least 24 hours.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Avoid during lactation as ebastine and its metabolite are excreted in breast milk.

Lab Monitoring
- Generally not required for routine use. Liver function tests may be considered in patients with hepatic impairment.
- ECG monitoring in patients with known QT prolongation risk factors.
Doctor Notes
- Monitor for potential drug interactions, especially with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics) which may increase ebastine levels.
- Advise patients on appropriate dosage and administration for pediatric use.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
