Description
Overview of the medicine
Finorex 10 mg contains Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by reducing the size of the enlarged prostate gland. While Finasteride 5 mg is the standard dose for BPH, 10 mg is not a commonly prescribed strength.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For BPH, the typical dose of Finasteride is 5 mg once daily, with or without food. Finasteride 10 mg is not a commonly prescribed or approved dose for BPH or androgenetic alopecia.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients, although plasma half-life may be slightly prolonged.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or break, especially to avoid exposure to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Mechanism of Action
Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is primarily responsible for prostatic growth. By lowering DHT levels, Finasteride helps shrink the prostate.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement for BPH symptoms may take 6 months or more.
Excretion
Excreted via urine and feces; approximately 57% in feces and 39% in urine.
Half life
Approximately 5-6 hours in healthy young men, up to 8 hours in men over 70.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, bioavailability around 63-80%. Peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP3A4, primarily to two active metabolites with less potency than finasteride.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to finasteride or any component of the tablet
- Pregnancy (Finasteride is teratogenic and can cause abnormalities in male fetuses)
- Women and children
Drug Interactions
No significant interactions
No clinically significant drug interactions have been identified with Finasteride.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific treatment recommended for overdose due to the drug's properties. Symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Finasteride is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to the risk of male fetal abnormalities. It is not indicated for use in women. It is unknown if finasteride is excreted in human milk.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials (e.g., PLESS study) have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of finasteride 5 mg in reducing prostate volume and improving BPH symptoms over several years. Data for 10 mg strength is not commonly available for BPH treatment.
Lab Monitoring
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels should be monitored regularly as finasteride can decrease PSA levels (by about 50%), which should be adjusted when interpreting results for prostate cancer screening.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients that improvement in BPH symptoms may take 6 months or more.
- Counsel patients on potential sexual side effects and the importance of continued therapy.
- Inform patients that finasteride can lower PSA levels, and adjustments must be made for prostate cancer screening interpretation.
- Note that 10 mg strength is uncommon for finasteride and review the indication if prescribed.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day.
- Do not crush or break the tablet, as women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling broken or crushed tablets.
- Inform your doctor about any new or worsening symptoms, especially concerning sexual function or breast changes.
- Regular PSA monitoring is crucial, and your doctor will interpret your results accordingly.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Finasteride is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet.
- Limit alcohol intake, as it can worsen BPH symptoms.
- Avoid caffeine and highly spiced foods, which can irritate the bladder.
