Overview of the medicine
Lifitegrast ophthalmic solution is used to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. It works by blocking the interaction between LFA-1 and ICAM-1, reducing inflammation associated with the condition.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in each eye twice daily (approximately 12 hours apart).
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not studied, but minimal systemic absorption suggests no adjustment needed.
How to Take
For topical ocular use only. Instill one drop into each eye. Invert the closed single-use container several times to mix the emulsion before use. Use immediately after opening and discard any remaining solution. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Lifitegrast is a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist. It binds to LFA-1, a cell surface protein on T-lymphocytes, and blocks the interaction of LFA-1 with its cognate ligand, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). This inhibition prevents T-cell activation and migration, thereby reducing inflammation associated with dry eye disease.
