Description
Overview of the medicine
Metrozen 200 mg Suspension contains Metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat a wide range of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 400-800 mg orally 2-3 times daily for 5-10 days depending on the infection. For severe infections, higher doses may be used.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment, especially with repeated dosing, due to accumulation of metabolites.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Administer orally with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative. It enters the cell of susceptible organisms and is reduced by electron transport proteins to form reactive nitro-radicals. These radicals disrupt DNA synthesis and cause DNA damage, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within a few hours for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Mainly renal (60-80%), with a smaller amount excreted in feces (6-15%).
Half life
Approximately 8 hours (range 6-12 hours).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations occurring 1-2 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, mainly by oxidation with side-chain cleavage and glucuronide conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
- First trimester of pregnancy (relative contraindication, generally avoided unless essential)
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, flushing, tachycardia, dyspnea) due to inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase. Avoid alcohol during and for at least 48 hours after treatment.
Warfarin
Potentiates anticoagulant effect, increased risk of bleeding. INR monitoring required.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, ataxia, and mild disorientation. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally avoided in the first trimester. Use in second and third trimesters only if clearly needed. Excreted into breast milk, therefore, either discontinue breastfeeding or interrupt metronidazole treatment for 12-24 hours.
