Description
Overview of the medicine
Cromolyn Sodium is an ophthalmic solution used to prevent and treat ocular symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, including itching, burning, and redness. It works by stabilizing mast cells and preventing the release of inflammatory mediators.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops in each eye 4-6 times daily at regular intervals. Continued use is necessary to maintain effect.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required. Use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Instill drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications. Remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
Mechanism of Action
Cromolyn Sodium acts as a mast cell stabilizer. It inhibits the degranulation of sensitized mast cells that occurs after exposure to specific antigens. This prevents the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators (e.g., leukotrienes, prostaglandins) from mast cells, thereby reducing the allergic response.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effect may take several days to a few weeks (up to 4 weeks) to become apparent.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed cromolyn sodium is rapidly and almost completely excreted unchanged in the urine and bile in approximately equal amounts.
Half life
Not well-defined for ocular use due to minimal systemic absorption. Systemic half-life is approximately 80 minutes.
Absorption
Systemic absorption is minimal following ophthalmic administration. Less than 0.03% of a dose is absorbed systemically.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Cromolyn Sodium or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Ophthalmic corticosteroids
No significant known interactions when used concomitantly. May provide additive benefits.
Other ophthalmic solutions
Administer other ophthalmic medications at least 5-10 minutes apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose via ocular administration is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. In the event of accidental ingestion or excessive ocular use, supportive measures may be initiated if any systemic effects occur, though these are rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cromolyn sodium is poorly absorbed and excretion into breast milk is expected to be minimal; likely safe during lactation.

Cromolyn sodium has been extensively studied in clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for the prevention and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Its mechanism of mast cell stabilization is well-established.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not required for Cromolyn Sodium ophthalmic solution.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the prophylactic nature of cromolyn sodium; patients should be advised to use it regularly for sustained benefit, particularly before anticipated allergen exposure.
- Remind patients that the full therapeutic effect may not be immediate and can take up to several weeks.
- Counsel on proper instillation technique to avoid contamination and maximize efficacy.
Patient Guidelines
- Use regularly as prescribed for best results, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not wear soft contact lenses during treatment; remove them before application and wait 15 minutes before reinsertion.
- Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
- If you experience severe irritation or allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
This medicine may cause temporary blurred vision upon instillation. Exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.
Lifestyle Advice
- Identify and avoid known allergens (e.g., pollen, pet dander, dust mites) that trigger your allergic conjunctivitis.
- Maintain good hygiene, including regular hand washing, to prevent eye infections.
- Consider using sunglasses outdoors to reduce exposure to environmental allergens.
